The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017)

I feel like I have been chasing down a copy of ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter’ also known and shown at film festivals as ‘February’ for about a year now. I only heard amazing things and my favorite, Emma Roberts stars in the widely-nominated film. Maybe the film has had too much build up because I think this is the most disappointing film of the year.

The film is centered around Kat and Rose, two girls left at their all-female boarding school alone when their parents do not show to pick them up for winter break. From there, it's a slow reveal of a more sinister force that is playing with them.

The movie takes place in winter, which is my favorite setting for a horror movie. So many beautiful shots, cool colors, desolate feelings and the unforgiving temperature can be conveyed like in ‘Krampus’, ‘The Awakening’, ‘Game of Thrones’ or the video game ‘Until Dawn’. I think the film may have tried for these elements but the just didn’t make it there. The acting was pretty good and I’d love to see Kiernan Shipka in more horror movies in the future. The film didn’t make me think, it didn’t keep me guessing, it didn’t make me dread, it didn’t make me feel...well anything. Just gray, just tasteless… in need of more ‘color’ or ‘salt’. Like I said previously, the most disappointing film of the year. Sorry guys! I was looking forward to this one too.

Overall Ratings-- Scare Factor: Lacking in any suspense, visuals and a strong story. If there were an award for it, The Blackcoat’s Daughter would win the ‘Most Likely to doze off during’ Award. The music and lack of action had my boyfriend out in 20 minutes and me struggling to not follow suit. Rating: ❤
