Bioluminescence

I'm sure you have seen in films like Avatar or Life of Pi glowing rivers and photos online of beaches at night with illuminated surf. This is a real thing and you can experience it in Florida.

Located on the space coast, the Indian River Lagoon area comes alive at night. Tiny plankton in the water called Dino-flagellates emit a blue-green light when disturbed. A swirl of your hand, the path of a swimming dolphin and sweep of a paddle will leave a trail of light in the water. The summer months when the waters are warmest, June-Early October, tend to be the best for bio-luminescence. It is said the best way to experience the glowing water is kayaking because it allows you to be in close proximity to water while retreating to areas with less light pollution and more wildlife.
