The Florida Man

In the news, there is a reoccurring culprit to a lot of strange problems. You might have heard of him; The Florida Man. Every day there seems to be a bizarre story and it begins with a 'Florida man'. A recent and probably my favorite example is "Florida Man shoots girlfriend, blames dog" (WFTV) but it doesn't end there:

• Florida Man attempts to smoke crack in ICU, almost burns down hospital. Northwest Florida Daily News

• Florida Man flashes buttocks at IHOP after impersonating a police officer to get free food. International Business Times

• Florida Man bites off neighbor's ear because he wouldn't give him a cigarette. CBS 12

• Florida man claims wife was kidnapped by holograms. Huffington Post

• Florida Man holds up Domino's delivery man over pizza and wings. Clayton News Daily

• Florida Man escapes adult novelty store with $300 Jenna Jameson doll in tow. The Smoking Gun

• Florida Man calls 911 to check on his tax return. Tampa Bay Times

• Florida Man really, really wants to force a jury to watch his sex tape. Sun-Sentinel

• Florida Man caught masturbating in McDonald's parking lot, claims his privacy was invaded. NBC-2

• Florida Man attacks nephew over undercooked noodles. Independent Florida Alligator

• Florida Man convicted of burying ex-reporter in concrete for his "Magic: The Gathering" collection. New York Daily News

The title of 'Florida Man' is so prominent that it has become a notable meme jokingly interpreting the stories as the name of the same individual in multiple unrelated news articles, rather than a description of various actual men who hail from or live in Florida. What is it about Florida and strange and unusual activity? Some speculate that it is the combination of high heat and high humidity adversely affecting brains or due to a mix of native Floridians, those who have settled here from other places and tourists create a volatile mix of many different cultures and views in close proximity. Practically speaking, it is likely Florida's relaxed freedom of information laws that make it easier for journalists to learn about the crimes.

Either way... The Florida man continues to wreak havoc across the state. Stay safe out there!
